The Raimund Theater opened in 1893 and was named after the famous Austrian playwright Ferdinand Raimund. Originally conceived as a popular theater for classical plays and operettas, over time it developed into a stage of great artistic significance in the German-speaking world.

After extensive renovation in the 1980s, it became part of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW). The same renowned musical theater association also operates the Ronacher and the Theater an der Wien.
