A theater in the heart of Berlin
Situated in the heart of Berlin's Charlottenburg district, the Renaissance Theater stands as the sole fully preserved Art Deco theater in Europe. Over its century-long existence, this venerable stage continues to offer an authentic theater experience reminiscent of 1920s Berlin. Through a deliberate blend of literary excellence and entertainment, the theater has established itself as an actor's theater throughout its existence. While the Renaissance Theater doesn't maintain a permanent ensemble, renowned actors have significantly shaped the face of the stage through recurring engagements. History of the Renaissance Theater
The history of the theater is inextricably linked to the golden age of Berlin's theater scene. Opened in 1922 under the direction of Theodor Tagger (known by his pseudonym Ferdinand Bruckner), the stage quickly established itself as a venue for sophisticated drama. Directors such as Gustav Hartung shaped the early years, during which the theater boldly broke social taboos. Today, artistic director Guntbert Warns continues this tradition by bringing contemporary material and modern issues to the stage. Whether it's big names such as Katja Riemann and Paula Romy in current productions or musical evenings with artists such as Sven Ratzke, Julian Bohn, or Peter Schneider, the theater remains a lively venue for cathartic art.
Architecture & Art Deco character
The Renaissance Theater is considered an architectural gem and is the only completely preserved Art Deco theater in Europe. Renowned architect Oskar Kaufmann designed the renovation in 1926, creating a total work of art that has been preserved in its original condition to this day by the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the State of Berlin. The auditorium is particularly impressive with its inlay work made of precious woods depicting scenes from the Commedia dell'arte. Each sculpture tells a story and transports visitors into a world that goes far beyond minimalist art. When the curtain rises, guests experience an atmosphere that breathes the spirit of legends such as Ernest Hemingway and Jewish author Lili Grün.
Literary and musical events
In addition to the grand productions within the theater hall, regular readings and other literary and musical events are presented in a second venue, the Bruckner Foyer, designed in the Art Deco style.
Focus of the Renaissance Theater
Under the artistic direction of Guntbert Warns, the theater places its focus on contemporary international dramas with original and premiere works by award-winning authors, as well as significant pieces from historical eras, especially the Renaissance, with modern adaptations. Two other focal points are music dramas and productions related to Berlin. Supported by funding from the state of Berlin, this private theater critically engages with current societal developments while providing entertainment. In addition to this, the theater actively seeks direct engagement with the audience through regular discussion series, audience dialogues, and the Young Salon.
Four to five productions per season
Every season, the theater, which J. W. Preuß, one of the most profound connoisseurs of the Berlin theater scene, referred to as "Germany's most sophisticated private stage," produces four to five original productions, including the set designs produced in its own workshops. Furthermore, the theater showcases guest performances and the adoption of plays from other theaters. Through its extensive touring activities in German-speaking regions, the Renaissance Theater garners strong recognition beyond the borders of Berlin.
