High Standard of Contemporary Art in the MuseumsQuartier
The Kunsthalle Wien is one of the most important institutions for contemporary art in the Austrian capital. At its two locations in the MuseumsQuartier and on Karlsplatz, it presents a diverse program of exhibitions, events, and educational formats every year, aimed at a broad, international audience.
A central focus is on the production of new works of art. To this end, the Kunsthalle Wien works closely with artists and partner institutions from Vienna and around the world. Based on current research, exhibitions, publications, and projects are created that offer artists a visible platform. The aim is to create an open space for exchange, critical debate, and social discussion, and to promote dialogue about contemporary art in all its facets. Current program
This year, from May 1 to October 26, 2026, the Kunsthalle Wien presents its exhibition highlight:
Lebt und arbeitet in Wien, Contemporary Art from Vienna
Over a period of six months, the Kunsthalle Wien will present the largest overview of the Viennese contemporary art scene that the institution has organized in over a decade in all of its exhibition spaces. Sculptures, installations, drawings, paintings, photographs, performances, and videos by over 50 artists will be presented in an exhibition focusing on new commissioned works and works that have not yet been shown in Vienna. The title of the exhibition is derived from an overview first presented at the Kunsthalle in 2000 and continues a format that offers insight into the dynamic, transnational, and culturally diverse artist communities living and working in Vienna today. The exhibition is accompanied by a year-long public program."
The complete exhibition program can be found on the Kunsthalle Wien website.
History and Architecture
The history of the Kunsthalle Wien began with an unusual temporary solution: in 1992, a temporary building made of containers, designed by architect Adolf Krischanitz, opened on Karlsplatz. The striking yellow pavilion, which was initially the subject of considerable controversy, not only shaped the cityscape but also provided new impetus for the Viennese art and exhibition scene.
