Vienna: Main line closure on the S-Bahn

Information for the 2026–2027 academic year

With your EasyCityPass Vienna, you can easily explore Vienna using public transportation. However, there will soon be some major construction projects on the Vienna S-Bahn.

The eastern region is growing steadily, and with it, the demands on modern public transportation are increasing. With the Vienna S-Bahn Upgrade, ÖBB is investing in a future-ready rail network: modernized, digitized, and equipped with greater capacity. In the future, longer and more modern trains will provide more seating as well as more frequent and reliable service. The necessary conditions for this are already being established today.

In this article, you’ll find all the important information about the main line closure.

What the suspension means for you specifically

  • Extensive modernization work and track closures are necessary on the main line through the end of 2027. For more information, visit www.oebb.at/stammstreckensperren
  • Please note that new schedules will take effect in the Eastern Region during these periods. Some train services will be canceled or rerouted.
  • Construction work and service restrictions on subways and trams will also occur on the Wiener Linien network during the summer months.
  • Additionally, starting July 4, 2026, the S80 line will be suspended on the section between Vienna Hütteldorf and Vienna Meidling / Vienna Central Station. For more information on the suspension of the S80, visit: www.oebb.at/s80

From July 4 to September 6, 2026, the S80 line between Vienna Hütteldorf and Vienna Central Station will be suspended due to construction work on the Vienna S-Bahn main line between Vienna Meidling and Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz.

Alternative offer

  • Bus replacement service (SEV) running every 30 minutes between Vienna Hütteldorf and Vienna Meidling, with stops at Hietzinger Hauptstraße and Vienna Speising
  • Alternatively, lines 56A, 56B, and 60 (Hofwiesengasse – U4 Hietzing) as well as line 62 (Vienna Speising/Preyergasse – Vienna Meidling) are available

Summer Closure: Vienna Praterstern – Vienna Floridsdorf

From July 4, 2026, to September 6, 2026, there will be no trains running on the Vienna S-Bahn main line between Wien Praterstern and Wien Floridsdorf. A bus replacement service (SEV) will be available as an alternative:

  • All stops on Bus SV900: Vienna Praterstern – Vienna Traisengasse – Vienna Handelskai – Vienna Floridsdorf
  • New: Direct shuttle bus Vienna Meidling (Eichenstraße) – Längenfeldgasse (U4, U6): To relieve congestion on the U6 and provide an additional connection to the U4. The benefit for you: more space and a travel time of just 6 minutes.

Road closures north of Vienna

On the northern section of the S-Bahn, the digital train control system will be put into operation to enable more reliable and frequent service in the future. As a result, additional closures north of Vienna will be necessary from August 10 to September 6, 2026:

  • Nordwestbahn: Vienna Praterstern – Jedlersdorf (S3/S4) / Korneuburg (REX3)
  • Laaer Ostbahn: Vienna Praterstern – Gerasdorf (S2) / Wolkersdorf (REX2)
  • Nordbahn: Vienna Praterstern – Vienna Süßenbrunn (S1)

REX trains already start and end in Korneuburg and Wolkersdorf, respectively. A comprehensive rail replacement service will get you to the nearest subway or commuter rail station quickly.

Nordwestbahn

  • Alternative to S3/S4: Bus SV903: Jedlersdorf – Vienna Floridsdorf (U6), travel time approx. 13 minutes
  • Alternative to REX3: Bus SV913: Korneuburg – Vienna Praterstern (U1, U2, S-Bahn), travel time approx. 28 minutes
  • Bus SV923: Korneuburg – Vienna Handelskai (U6, S45), travel time approx. 26 minutes

  • REX1 detour via Wien Stadlau, Wien Simmering, and Wien Hauptbahnhof

Please note the corresponding SEV stops in Vienna Floridsdorf, Vienna Handelskai, and Vienna Praterstern (see map). The blue (SV900) and yellow (SV905) lines between Vienna Praterstern and Vienna Floridsdorf will remain in service. You can find all SEV bus departure times in real time on SCOTTY mobil, among other platforms.

Major road closure: Vienna Central Station / St. Marx – Vienna Praterstern

Due to extensive construction work along the Vienna S-Bahn main line, the section between Vienna Central Station/St. Marx and Vienna Praterstern will be closed from September 7, 2026, through the end of October 2027.

We are taking the following steps to ensure that you can continue to reach your destination quickly and reliably:

  • U1, U2, and U4: Increased service frequency
  • U6: Frequent service and a reserve train during morning rush hour
  • Tram Line O: Only long trains in service to increase capacity
  • Tram Line 18: Extended service to the stadium (U2)
  • Tram line 62: Detour via Vienna Central Station to Quartier Belvedere
  • Direct shuttle bus between Vienna Meidling (Eichenstraße) and Längenfeldgasse (U4, U6) to relieve congestion on the U6 and provide an additional connection to the U4
  • REX1: Detour via Vienna Stadlau, Vienna Simmering, and Vienna Central Station

We ask that you use the existing Vienna public transit network as an alternative.

3 great routes between Praterstern and Vienna Central Station:

  • The Direct Route: U1 Praterstern – Vienna Central Station/Südtiroler Platz, to relieve congestion on the U6
  • The Alternative: Tram Line O, stopping at all stations on the Vienna S-Bahn main line
  • The Bypass: U2 Praterstern – Stadion, then continue on Tram Line 18 to Vienna Central Station

Connection to Vienna International Airport

Due to the closure of the Vienna S-Bahn main line, routes to and from Vienna International Airport have also changed. The following efficient alternatives are available:

  • The S7 runs to/from the St. Marx stop --> Connection to tram lines 18 and 71 • REX 7: Daily detour from Kaiserebersdorf to Vienna Central Station and onward toward Mödling as the S2
  • Long-distance trains RJX, RJ, and IC continue to run via Vienna Central Station to Vienna International Airport
  • City Airport Train: Replacement bus service (“CAT by bus”) between Wien Mitte and Vienna International Airport
  • Vienna Airport Bus: The existing VAB routes from Wien Westbahnhof, Schwedenplatz, and Donauzentrum will continue to operate. Starting September 5, 2026, an additional bus service will run between Wien Praterstern and Vienna International Airport.

How often do trains run between the airport and the main station?

The final schedule has not yet been finalized, but for the most part it will remain unchanged during the first construction phase (30-minute intervals, CAT service to Wien Mitte). During the second construction phase, beginning September 7, a 15-minute interval will be introduced between Vienna Airport and Vienna Central Station, and trains on the REX7 line will be rerouted to Vienna Central Station. The FV schedule will remain unchanged.
