Christmas markets in Vienna

Vienna, the city of the most beautiful backdrops. Palaces, grand hotels, museums - they all radiate the splendor of a great past. But in winter, thanks to its Christmas markets, they also radiate the warmth of the festive season.

Here are our top 7 must-see Christmas markets in Vienna.

  • EasyCityPass insider tip
  • Christmas market on the town hall square
  • Arts and crafts Christmas market on Maria-Theresien-Platz
  • Historical sights in the 1st district
  • Belvedere Palace
  • Art Advent on Karlsplatz
  • Alleys on Spittelberg
  • Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace

First, here's our EasyCityPass secret tip:

Throughout the city (including Graben, Michaeler Platz and many more) there are punch stands run by the charitable organization LIONS. The people are friendly and the punch is delicious, with alcohol, low alcohol or alcohol-free. You can also get it cheaper than at the Christmas markets and the proceeds go to social projects. We think that's a very good Christmas approach.

The postcard Christmas market

The Christmas tree in front of Vienna City Hall is a sight of superlatives. Together with the Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, it is probably the most beautiful place in Vienna during Advent. In addition to handicrafts and culinary delights, there is also a wonderful multi-level carousel.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, you can also take a spin around the Christmas-lit Rathausplatz at the Ice Dream.

The highlight for lovers and all people of the heart is the Herzlbaum.

The arts and crafts Christmas market

At Maria-Theresien-Platz, between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum, you can plan and buy your Christmas presents from midday. A place full of wonderful handicrafts and unusual gift ideas. The ambience: enchanting.

History in the First District

The Christmas markets at St. Stephen's Cathedral, on the Freyung or Am Hof radiate the history and coziness of Old Vienna with their traditional crafts, nativity scenes and Advent music.

More scenery is almost impossible

Anyone who knows Belvedere Palace and its park knows that if you were to add an evening Christmas market to the mix, you couldn't get any more enchanting kitsch. And yes, it's true. It is also open during the day - small, lovely, a MUST see.

For connoisseurs and fans

The Art Advent on Karlsplatz has a large fan base. Of course, the ambience at the foot of the Karlskirche is outstanding, but its art installations, show workshops and art offerings are uniquely enchanting. For all culinary delights: everything is BIO. We like this.

The many alleyways on Spittelberg are packed with visitors and countless stalls selling arts and crafts and culinary delights. This is Vienna, this is where the Viennese are at home.

The Imperial

The culture and Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace presents itself with a large children's program and lots of crafts. The palace and its park are elegant, the Christmas market is charming and enchanting. The highlight: after Christmas, it becomes Vienna's New Year's market.

We wish you a peaceful Advent season and a Merry Christmas with your loved ones!
