The second venue in the heart of Vienna

The Vienna Chamber Opera on Fleischmarkt was founded in 1953 and is an integral part of Vienna's cultural life. When the federal government withdrew as a subsidy provider in 2011, a new concept for the performance by the Theater an der Wien was developed together with the supporting association of the Vienna Chamber Opera in coordination with the City of Vienna, whose repertoire was thus supplemented by the diverse spectrum of the intimate chamber opera repertoire with a young ensemble of singers.

Young talents at the MusikTheater an der Wien

For the repositioning of the chamber opera as of the 2022/23 season under the new directorship of Stefan Herheim, MusikTheater an der Wien is expanding the promotion of young talent with the CAMPUS. Highly talented young artists will continue to be at the center of events, but without tying them into a permanent ensemble. Instead, students from various European university institutions will be regularly seen on stage in appropriate roles together with established singers. In this way, young female artists benefit from the experience of established performers and can participate in master classes. In addition, the young format LATE NIGHT is a program for night owls: From musical cabaret to jazz, from improvisation to chanson, from baroque to ballroom, everything is possible.
