The second venue in the heart of Vienna

The Vienna Chamber Opera on Fleischmarkt was founded in 1953 and is an integral part of Vienna's cultural life. When the federal government withdrew as a subsidy provider in 2011, a new concept for the performance by the Theater an der Wien was developed together with the supporting association of the Vienna Chamber Opera in coordination with the City of Vienna, whose repertoire was thus supplemented by the diverse spectrum of the intimate chamber opera repertoire with a young ensemble of singers.

Young talents at the MusikTheater an der Wien

Since the 2022/23 season, the MusikTheater an der Wien has expanded its support for young talent with the CAMPUS under the new directorship of Stefan Herheim. Highly talented young artists will continue to be at the center of events, without binding them to a permanent ensemble. Instead, students from various European university institutions will regularly appear on stage in suitable roles with established singers. In this way, young artists benefit from established performers' experience and can participate in master classes.
