Practical tips for your hop-on/hop-off tour

Plan your route with the Big Bus Tours app: it shows you the live locations of the buses, waiting times, and nearby stops. Start as early as possible to avoid traffic jams and allow enough time for stops such as Schönbrunn Palace or the MuseumsQuartier. Headphones are available on the bus, but bring your own if you prefer. For photo spots, we recommend the upper deck and the right side of the Ringstrasse.

In changeable weather, a light jacket is advisable as the upper deck may be open. Pay attention to the departure intervals of the respective line so that you can change between the Red and Palace Routes without long waiting times. If you want to visit several sights, set yourself a time limit per stop (for example, 60–90 minutes) so that you don't miss the last scheduled tour. On rainy days, it's worth getting a seat at the front of the lower deck – here you'll have a good view and stay dry.

With 48-hour tickets, you can spread the routes out over two days: Day 1, city center/ring road, Day 2 castles and Danube. Charge your smartphone in advance and take a power bank with you if you use the app, navigation, and photos intensively.

Recommended stops and must-see attractions

For architecture and history, the stops Oper/Ringstraße (State Opera, Albertina), Hofburg/Heldenplatz (Imperial Residence, Volksgarten), Stephansdom (Old Town, Graben), and Prater (Ferris wheel, green spaces) are particularly suitable. On the Palace Route, Schönbrunn (palace, gardens, Gloriette) and Belvedere (Klimt's “The Kiss”) are highlights.

For art fans, additional stops at the MuseumsQuartier (Leopold Museum, MUMOK) and the Kunsthistorisches/Naturhistorisches Museum axis are worthwhile.

Food stops are available around the Naschmarkt, which you can reach in a few minutes from the Opera House.
