The ‘Michel’ is Hamburg’s largest church and one of the city’s must-see sights. Its bell tower offers a stunning view over the city. St. Michael’s Church is the most important baroque church in northern Germany. With its unmistakable copper roof, the church tower is Hamburg’s iconic landmark. Why not discover St. Michael’s for yourself? This unique church is well worth a visit.
The tower is 132 meters high. On the viewing platform, 106 meters above the Elbe, you have Hamburg at your feet. Enjoy the view over the city and the harbor.
From the hall on the 1st floor (after 52 steps) you can easily reach the viewing platform by elevator. But you can also take the stairs with 452 steps and pass by the tower floors with old clockwork and the copper exhibition.
The crypt, or the vault of St. Michael’s Church, is a worldwide unique attraction. Here many well-known and not-so-well-known hamburgers are buried. Nowadays it offers space for four permanent exhibitions, a film as well as services and concerts. Interesting exhibitions give an insight into the eventful history of St. Michaelis. Grave finds from the period 1762-1817, original pieces of the fire of 1906, and from the time of reconstruction as well as a listening station with information on music deepen your knowledge of the Michel.
We host the St. Michael’s midday prayer service with organ music every day at 12.00 p.m. Here you have the opportunity to enjoy 20 minutes of tranquillity, listen to the melodies of the organ, hear a brief spiritual message, pray and continue your day with God’s blessing.
